Where will Robert Lewandowski go?

The Bayern Munich forward Robert Lewandowski was named The Striker of the Year at the 2021 Ballon d’Or ceremony. After coming second to the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi, he made some big headlines.
The atmosphere is all warmed up with the news of his transfer away from Bayern Munich in the summer. There are so many possibilities in the picture.

There is news that Lewandowski wants a move away from the Bundesliga giants. He wishes to move to Real Madrid. However, Madrid has been linked with two other forwards. Paris Saint-Germain’s Kylian Mbappé has made sure to vocalize that he wishes to be at Real Madrid. He made it to the top 10 of the Ballon d’Or rankings and is sure to make some moves.

But he faces competition from Erling Haaland, who secured the 11th spot at the Ballon d’Or rankings. Real Madrid has shown interest in the Borussia Dortmund forward as well. With this already in view, Lewandowski might not end up at Real Madrid after all.

Many managers currently want to swoop in on the opportunity of forwards moving away from their clubs. Chelsea’s out-of-form forward Timo Werner might move to a new club. Barcelona and Manchester United are interested in him. This move will leave Tuchel hunting for another striker alongside Romelu Lukaku, who hasn’t impressed anyone after arriving at Chelsea. With Haaland being the long-term desire, it’s unlikely to see the Dortmund forward at Stamford Bridge any time soon.

Elsewhere, Xavi is improving his squad and wants to grab Werner and Hakim Ziyech, who have failed to adapt to the Premier League. Both players have proved themselves in the past years and could do very well at Barcelona.

Simultaneously, Manchester United’s Rangnick is keen on taking in Erling Haaland and Timo Werner across two transfer windows. Rangnick would be happy to unite with ex-player Werner from their time together at RB Leipzig.

But with Haaland moving away from Dortmund for sure, Timo Werner could be their next striker. Dortmund has shown interest in Werner, and there is no question on how well he will perform on his return to the Bundesliga.

Then who will Bayern bring in the replace Lewandowski if he leaves? Bayern is known to beat its competition by landing its best players. Meaning they could swoop in on Timo Werner before Borussia Dortmund.
With so many forwards moving around and nothing being definite at the moment, Robert Lewandowski could end up playing for anyone next season.

Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City, and Borussia Dortmund can all have a new forward soon. It is unpredictable where Lewandowski will go. But it’s definite, wherever he goes, goals are coming!

Ballon D’or 2021: The 3 men who can win it

  • Leo Messi: The star PSG and argentine forward Leo Messi is the current holder of Ballon D’or and is one of the favorites to win the award again this year. Messi scored 38 goals and provided 12 assists for Fc Barcelona. He played a very influential role in guiding Argentina to its 1st Copa America since 1993. He lead from the front as a captain and provided 9 G/A in the route to victory.
  • Robert Lewandowski: Poland and Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski has been in incredible form since 2019. He was the favorite to win the award in 2020 but it was canceled. Last season, he scored 46 goals and provided 7 assists helping Bayern win their 9th consecutive Bundesliga title.
  • Jorginho: Jorginho was the key man in the midfield for Chelsea as they won the 2020 Champions League. Due to his influential role in helping Chelsea win the Champions League and Italy win The Euros, he was awarded as the Uefa Player of the year of 2020.

Premier League: Who is going to be at the wheel at Manchester United?

Manchester United was in a tough spot after sacking Ole Gunnar Solskjær just days before a Champions League game. Michael Carrick managed to deliver despite many doubters. He started an eleven that Ole rarely deployed. This decision turned out to work in Manchester United’s favor. The Red Devils scored two past Villarreal to qualify to the last 16 of the Champions League.

Although it was a good result, it seems unlikely for Carrick to become their full-time manager. However, that point remains debatable. We all know that Ole Gunnar was initially an interim manager. If Carrick manages to deploy the best squad and deliver results every week, he might as well be appointed the manager.

However, Manchester United is now hunting for a new manager. Let us have a look at some names that could take charge of the giants.

Zinedine Zidane: A free agent currently, Zidane is one of the most desirable managers for any club in this world. He led them in 263 games, winning 172 of those and only losing 36 games. That’s an impressive 65.4% win percentage for a manager who is just starting.

He also won 11 trophies in his tenure. Two LaLiga titles and two Spanish Super Cups. Two UEFA Super Cups and two FIFA Club World Cups. And the most prestigious Champions League, not once, not twice, but three times! There is no reason to look any further.

Mauricio Pochettino: He has recently been making the headlines, with rumors going around that Sir Alex Ferguson desires him as the next manager. Having managed two Premier League teams, Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur, he has good experience in the league.

Having a win statistics of 38.3% at Southampton and 54.3% at Spurs, he could manage the impressive squad at Old Trafford. With his winning rate going up to about 70% with PSG and an improved style of play, he could bring home some silverware to the starving Red Devils.

Erik ten Hag: He could be a good manager at United. However, he has openly denied his interest in taking up the job. He is currently at Ajax and has invested his entire time and focus in his team. He is not happy with the idea of changing his club mid-season. Therefore he is unlikely to arrive any time soon.

Brendan Rodgers: He might be having a rough patch at Leicester City this season, but there is no question on his managerial skills. In his first season at Swansea City, he guided them into the Premier League after winning the Championship Final in 2010. He then took over at Liverpool, almost winning the title in the second season. The title might mage slipped, but he won the LMA Manager of the Year award. Maybe he could repeat the feat at Old Trafford too!

Diego Simeone: He needs no introduction as he has served as manager at Atletico Madrid for almost ten years now, winning eight trophies during his tenure. He won two UEFA Super Cups, two Europa Leagues, and two LaLiga titles. One Copa del Rey, and a Super Cup. Atletico Madrid has been in the Champions League final three times in their entire history, two of those coming under his reign.

Unfortunately, he is having a disappointing start to the season. Drawing five in thirteen games isn’t much to his liking. Having the possibility of crashing out of the Champions League, he might change ships and arrive at Manchester United.

Champions League: Tables turn in group G

Before heading into the fifth game week of the Champions League group stage, group G had teams lined up as below:

Salzburg – 7 points ; Lille – 5 points ; Wolfsburg – 5 points ; Sevilla – 3 points.

It has been a close contest over the last few months. Salzburg had won two out of four, as they sat at the top. Lille and Wolfsburg shared the same number of points. Each winning one in four, with their goal difference setting them apart. Sevilla saw themselves at the bottom with three games drawn. Unfortunately, no wins to their name.

The tables turned as the fifth game week kicked off. Lille narrowly won against Salzburg. They held on to Jonathan David’s 31st-minute goal to take home three whole points! Both teams had an equal share of ball possession. With both having two shots on target, Lille managed to squeeze one. Lille’s goalkeeper Ivo Grbic made two save, making sure they sealed their points.

Elsewhere, Sevilla registered their first win at the group stage! After four long weeks of waiting, they scored two goals against Wolfsburg. Sevilla dominated the game with 61% ball possession and seven shots on target. They created an impressive 12 chances against Wolfsburg’s 5.

Sevilla took the lead in the 12th minute. An accurate ball delivered by Ivan Rakitic met an unmarked Joan Jordán’s head to see the back of the net. As the match proceeded, they almost lost their lead to Nmecha’s shot. Yassine Bounou managed to divert it onto the crossbar and away. Wolfsburg couldn’t equalize, even though Sevilla held on narrowly.

Wolfsburg registered just a single shot on target. They, however, managed to concede only two goals, thanks to their keeper. Pavao Pervan made five saves throughout the 90 minutes to keep their hopes of rescuing a point alive until the last minute. Sevilla forced repeated saves by Pervan to keep them in the game. However, Rafa Mir received a ball from across. With plenty of space, he quite comfortably scored in the dying seconds.

This win took Sevilla in third place with two points behind the group leader Lille. This current state of things means that the qualifying hope is still alive for all teams. In the final group stage match, Wolfsburg will face Lille, while Sevilla will play Salzburg. With one point separating each team from their immediate neighbors, it’s a must-win for all to secure their spot in the last 16 of the Champions League!

Champions League: Manchester United register their first win under new manager while Barcelona face disappointment

Michael Carrick was appointed the interim manager of Manchester United ahead of their Champions League clash against Villarreal. Many fans and pundits were questioning this decision and hailing it as a disastrous management move. However, Carrick managed to silence all the negative talks.

His starting eleven featured Anthony Martial, Donny van de Beek, Jadon Sancho, and Cristiano Ronaldo. A new start and a good starting eleven that The Red Devil’s fans have long-awaited. Raphaël Varane didn’t feature due to a hamstring injury. While Luke Shaw is still recovering from his head injury, thus Alex Telles filled in. Their familiar 4-2-3-1 formation worked well enough to register a win against Villarreal.

Both teams shared an equal possession of the ball. With the newcomers finally getting a Champions League start, Manchester United impressively registered 11 shots, with six on target. They also had 33 accurate long balls, 38 dribbles won, and 11 successful interceptions. De Gea made three diving saves to keep the clean sheet intact.

With their next match played on Sunday, Carrick smartly substituted players. Ensuring they got enough rest and no injury concerns. Having Ronaldo and Sancho on the scoresheet, Manchester United has sealed their spot in the last 16 of the Champions League.

Elsewhere, Barcelona couldn’t register a win against Benfica. This result has left them fighting to qualify for the next stage. Their last group-stage match against Bayern München will be a must-win. To avoid crashing out of the Champions League, they have to pull off a miracle. Benfica will face bottom-placed Dynamo Kyiv, who haven’t won a single game in 5 matches.

Xavi decided to play in a 3-4-2-1 attacking formation with Memphis Depay upfront. He, unfortunately, didn’t have a single shot on target. Barcelona created twice the chances than Benfica. However, they had only three shots on target.

Barcelona dominated the game with 65% ball possession, with an impressive 79 duels won, 22 crosses, and 14 shots. They came close to scoring with Yusuf Demir’s left-footed effort, which hit the crossbar. In the second half, De Jong’s header was tipped over the crossbar by Vlachodimos.

The real heartbreak came when The Catalans managed to score in the 83rd minute. Araujo scored from Alba’s corner only to realize he was a fraction offside. Further, in extra-time, Pique nearly scored from Depay’s corner. However, the three points slipped away as he saw his header go wide.

In the end, Benfica might be the ones with their face in their palms as they had a brilliant chance to run away with the three points in the 3rd minute of extra time. Benfica was two-on-one upfield, with Seferovic crucially beating Ter Stegen. However, his shot went wide of the post! A win for the visitors would have seen them move above Barcelona in the group.

With the match ending in a draw, Barcelona now faces an uphill task of beating Bayern to qualify. With Barcelona on 7 points and Benfica on 5 points, it will be a nail-biting final day showdown!

World Cup Qualifiers: Algeria’s unbeaten run, Italy’s heartbreak

Italy has set a new record this year by extending their unbeaten run to 37 matches. They achieved this feat by beating Lithuania in the 2022 World Cup qualifier match. Their last defeat before the unbeaten run was on September 10, 2018, against Portugal.

The Azzurri have had an impressive run. Mancini had led them to the Euro 2020 final unbeaten, which they won. The Italian players dug deep to push the match into extra time and take the trophy back to Rome after edging past England in the penalty shootout.

However, their unbeaten run has ended at the hands of Spain. They faced a 2-1 defeat against Spain in the UEFA Nations League on October 7, 2021. Brazil and Spain have held second place for the longest unbeaten run by a country, with 35 wins each. However, there seems to be a new contender.

Algeria is currently on their 33 games unbeaten run, achieving the feat by drawing against Burkina Faso at the 2022 World Cup qualifier match. Riyad Mahrez scored in the 21st minute to put Algeria ahead. However, they went on to concede in the next 20 minutes. Sofiane Feghouli gave the lead in the 68th minute. It could have been a win for Algeria but, Issoufou Dayo equalized towards the end. But all’s well that ends well. Algeria managed to qualify from their group for the next stage of the 2022 World Cup.

Algeria has earned the third-longest unbeaten run and is inside the touching distance to overtake Brazil, Spain, and Italy. While it all unfolds, we shall await a new record in the making!

Premier League: Unfortunate times for Ole Gunnar Solskjær at Manchester United

Ole Gunnar Solskjær was and always will be a club legend at Manchester United. He became the manager of The Red Devils in December 2018. A three-year tenure was quite impressive in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era. He replaced Jose Mourinho as an interim manager initially. However, he solidified his place soon. Let us look at his key stats over the last three years.

Ole managed 168 matches in all competitions and won 91. With a win percentage of 54.16%, he has the second-best win record in the new era. Only Jose managed to better it with a win percentage of 58.33%. Jose, however, managed 24 lesser matches. Jose had a goal-scoring ratio of 1.69 per game, while Ole marginally improved it to 1.83.

Jose won the Community Shield, the League Cup, and the UEFA Europa League with The Red Devils and lost one FA Cup Final to Chelsea. Even though Ole had an impressive run for three years, he missed out on Silverware. He came the closest to winning a trophy back in May when he met Villarreal in the Europa League Final. A heart-breaking tale to have lost out on penalties.

There was also another concern that The Red Devils faced. They conceded way too many goals. Under Ole, they had the longest run of failing to keep a clean sheet at Old Trafford. They have lost three matches in the Premier League, conceding three or more goals. They lost 4-0 away to Everton in 2019, lost 6-1 to Tottenham Hotspur at home in 2020, and 5-0 to Liverpool at home last month. They found the ball in their won goal 183 times in 168 games. This record was their worst defense statistics in the new era. They stuck to a 4-2-3-1 formation for the entire season, which didn’t quite work. Ole rotated his team formation only twice, changing it to a 3-4-1-2 against Tottenham and Manchester City.

Looking back, it’s clear that he didn’t experiment enough with his squad. Considering the squad depth and the potential some players hold, he hasn’t utilized it at all. He remained adamant about playing the same back four for most of the matches with the same tactics in the midfield. Many play-making players remained on the bench the entire season, even though the starting 11 wasn’t delivering. To see top players not making it to the starting 11, or getting enough game time from the bench, left the fans highly frustrated.

In just 12 matches in the Premier League, they conceded 21 goals. They now have a -1 goal difference. Only Norwich City and Newcastle United have conceded more goals in the same period. What is worse is that they both sit at 19th and 20th position respectively, while Manchester United are title contenders.

With just one win in five league matches and shipping 15 goals in that time, The Red Devils have seen themselves slip to 8th place with only 17 points out of 36 points this season. With them crashing out of the Carabao Cup back in September, they still need to work hard to qualify for the next stage of the Champions League. Sitting at the top of their group with equal points as Villarreal, the next two matches are a must-win.

With the current state, Manchester United had a good run under Ole Gunnar Solskjær. The past few months have been a difficult time for the club. However, they seem capable enough to turn it around. Ole has managed to bring in an impressive set of players during the transfer window, boosted by the return of Cristiano Ronaldo. They can achieve a lot. He has succeeded in bringing back positivity and hope to Old Trafford and the dressing room as well. It’s easy to forget his contributions, but he has done a great job at one of the toughest leagues in the world. Ole faced the axe due to piling frustrations and a poor run towards the end of his tenure, but he has set a brilliant foundation for his successor.
